Installing Custom Content for The Sims 3

How do you install custom content for the Sims 3? This guide will show you how to do it, step-by-step. Installing content is very easy and straightforward - the basic three steps apply:

  1. Download item
  2. Extract item
  3. Place (install) item

What's with the name?

No! No! It is not meant as an insult, we just like the acronym "DFDD". It is just meant to differentiate from TS2's version of DFFI - Downloading for Fracking Idiots, for "beginners" and DFFG - Downloading for Fracking Geniuses, for the "tech-heads".

And there is also a Sims 3 version, DFSS - Downloading for Smarmy Smartasses, for the "tech-heads".

Before you download

Before you go on a downloading spree, be sure to read these pages. They are basic info that you need to do or learn about only once, most of the time.

Getting it all Organized

Organizing content is crucial! Sooner or later there will be a piece of item that you no longer want or is causing issues. If everything is well organized, .package content is very easy to maintain. Again, it is mostly a one-time setup and once you have learned the technique of good organization, there would be less CC redownloads and/or reinstalls that need to be done, and maintaining CC would be a breeze!

The Main Event

This is it! These same basic steps apply for all CC and with all sites, for the most part. Some sites may not zip up the files if they are in .Sims3Pack format, so you just skip the unzipping part. What is essential is reading all the information the creator took the time to type up, as most of the time, it answers all the questions that arose with that particular item.
